"Yesterday, I had to leave at the 85th minute of the USA/ALG game for a previously scheduled lunch. I was kind of pissed about having to leave, but found it incredibly awesome that while walking down to the restaurant, I could hear no fewer than 3 bars/restaurants ERUPT with cheers and applause at Landon Donovan’s fucking kick-ass goal. This doesn’t really happen during the Olympics. This doesn’t happen during the World Series (we win every year). It might happen during the Super Bowl, but the crowd is almost always divided between the teams. This year World Cup has united an incredibly divided country, and renewed American patriotism.
You have to admit, it’s pretty inspiring. The drama of our face-off with England, the revoked goal against Slovenia, and the amazing last minute goal to send Team USA to take the top spot in group play has been like watching a slowly unwinding soap-opera. We stay tuned just to see what happens next. And we welcome it! Why shouldn’t we? 62% of Americans think our country is on the wrong track. We have oil gushing into the Gulf of Mexico. We have stopped the hemorrhaging of jobs, but by no means are losses being replaced. Unemployment is still the highest it’s been in decades. Thank God we have this distraction. And thanks be to Team USA for showing us that despite when things seem to be going poorly, when it feels like the rug has been pulled out from under us, when we’re faced with devastating outcomes, we some how, some way, get our act together and pull victory from the jaws of defeat at the very last minute. It really is the American way."
